Described as “[…] an exceptionally mature performer,” (Ontario Arts Review) with “[…] sheer pianistic power and accuracy […], unrelenting force and high-wire intensity.” (South Florida Classical Review), Catherine Ma has been performing internationally since her Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 14.
Catherine began playing the piano at the age of 5 under the tutelage of Mrs. Mei Zhi Bi, and competed and won her first competition the same year. She started competing nationally and won 1st place at the Canadian Music Competition at the age of 7, and the following year, became the youngest scholarship student at the Young Artists Performance Academy at the Royal Conservatory of Music, with Prof. Marietta Orlov.
She has also studied with Prof. Peter Longworth, Prof. Alexander Korsantia, and has played in numerous masterclasses for Prof. Roland Krüger, Mr. Ronan O’Hora, Mrs. Eliso Virsaladze, Mr. Boris Zarankin, Mr. Douglas Humphrey, Mrs. Yonghi Moon and others.
She has been invited to play in many concerts such as the Interharmony International Music Festival in Italy, the Euromusic 20th anniversary Gala concert, the Klangperspektiven Festival in Germany, the Piano Virtuoso series at the Four Seasons Performing Arts Centre, the 2017 Gina Bachauer International Piano Festival in Salt Lake City. This past summer, Catherine performed Tchaikovsky’s piano concerto #1 and Chopin’s piano concerto #1 with the Vidin Sinfonietta in Bulgaria. In January of 2019, she performed Chopin’s piano concerto #1 with the CalStateLA Symphony Orchestra.
She has also won numerous awards and competitions, most recently; 1st place at the Tkaczewski International Piano Competition, 2nd place at the Camerata Artists International Competition, 1st place at the PianoHouse International Piano Competition and 1st place at the Bremen International Piano Competition.
In addition to being an active performing artist, Catherine is also an ambassador for the Musician’s Dream Aid Foundation.
She is currently studying with Prof. Julian Martin at the Juilliard School.
